Baskin Aud 101 On Friday, April 04 at 1:20 pm, you are invited to join Associate Professor of Biomolecular Engineering Karen Miga’s BME 80G Bioethics course for a talk by Jonathan LoTempio on the foundational aspects of bioethics as it developed in the last 80 years. Bioethics as we understand it today is a product of the rules-based international order. It is a unique field of study because it has been sanctioned or supported at the highest level of government, rather than devolved to specialist agencies. However, this position is changing, offering time for stock-taking and consideration of new futures. In this seminar, we will discuss some pre-World War II antecedents of 20th-century bioethics, the bioethical wilderness from the War and Nuremberg up until the Belmont Report, and the Commission Era from 1974-2016. With this foundation, we will consider the futures of bioethics, public health ethics, and data ethics in light of our newly fractured rules-based order. Dr. Jonathan LoTempio Jr. is a globally engaged researcher working at the intersection of genomics, bioethics, and international policy. As a postdoctoral fellow in bioethics and human data at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, he studies the ethical, legal, and social implications of emerging genomic technologies within an international framework. 6	7 Questions That Matte… Questions That Matter: Disability in Medicine and Memoir April 7, 2025 1:00 am - 2:30 am Kuumbwa Jazz Center What does it mean to talk and write about the experiences of our bodies? How do the stories told about us mediate the narratives we construct? What are the stakes for disabled writers sharing their first-person perspectives with the world? In this dialogue with two scholars and memoirists of disability, we will explore how intellectual and aesthetic engagement with non-normative embodied life speaks to questions that matter — now more than ever. See more details BME80G: Kyle Roberts… BME80G: Kyle Robertson on Artificial Intelligence and the Criminal Justice System April 7, 2025 8:20 pm - 9:25 pm Jack Baskin Auditorium, J. Baskin Aud 101 On Monday, April 07 at 1:20 pm, you are invited to join Associate Professor of Biomolecular Engineering Karen Miga’s BME 80G Bioethics course for a talk by Kyle Robertson. Predictive algorithms are not just helping us write text (like this abstract), they are becoming part of the criminal justice system. Police departments use them to help with decisions, and courts use them to suggest bail options and amounts. In the future, trials and sentencing may also rely on these technologies. These developments raise important ethical questions about human freedom and causation. In this talk, I will focus on two questions: (1) What moral obligation do we have to use predictive algorithms to prevent crime? (2) How can we reconcile ideas of free will and blameworthiness with the apparent predictability of human behavior? Kyle Robertson received his doctorate in philosophy from UC Santa Cruz, where he now teaches as a Continuing Lecturer in Philosophy. Before discovering his love for philosophy, Kyle earned a J.D. from UC Berkeley Law and practiced intellectual property litigation for two years at Heller Ehrman LLP in Silicon Valley. In addition to teaching, Kyle is a program director at the Center for Public Philosophy at UC Santa Cruz. In this capacity he runs the Norcal high school ethics bowl, the San Quentin ethics bowl program, and a philosophy for children program. Kyle loves to discuss philosophical questions with people of all ages and from all walks of life. He lives in Santa Cruz, CA with his wife and two children. See more details BME80G: Christof Koc… BME80G: Christof Koch on Consciousness and its Place in Nature April 11, 2025 8:20 pm - 9:25 pm On Friday, April 11 at 1:20 pm, you are invited to join Associate Professor of Biomolecular Engineering Karen Miga’s BME 80G Bioethics course for a (virtual) talk by Christof Koch. Any scientific theory of consciousness, here meant as any experience – feeling-like-something, seeing, smelling, thinking, fearing, dreaming – needs to not only explain the relationship between experience and its substrate, the neural correlate of consciousness, but also why different experiences feel the way they do – why space feels spatially extended, why time flows and why colors feel different from an infected tooth or the taste of Nutella. Most contemporary theories of consciousness are based on computational functionalism. Integrated Information Theory takes a purely operational approach rooted in causal power. IIT argues that the neuronal correlates of consciousness, the maximum of intrinsic cause-effect power, are the posterior hot zone, and that certain types of meditative or psychedelic experiences may go together with a “silent” cortex. I will discuss clinical progress achieved in locating the footprints of such experiences to the posterior part of the cerebral cortex and in reliably detecting the presence of covert consciousness in patients with Disorder of Consciousness. Christof Koch PhD, is a neuroscientist best known for his studies and writings exploring the basis of consciousness, starting with the molecular biologist Francis Crick. Trained as a physicist, Christof was for 27 years a professor of biology and engineering at the California Institute of Technology. In 2011, he joined the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle as their Chief Scientist, becoming the President in 2015. He is now Meritorious Investigator at the Allen Institute and the Chief Scientist of the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation, with its focus on understanding consciousness, and how this knowledge can benefit humanity. See more details • •	12 Queer Aɸ Conference Queer Aɸ Conference April 12, 2025 Humanities 1 Building, Hum1 Rm 210 The UC Santa Cruz Philosophy Department is delighted to announce the Queer Aɸ (Queer Analytic Philosophy) Conference at UC Santa Cruz on April 12-13, 2025. The conference will foreground philosophical work in the analytic tradition (very broadly conceived) that is informed by queer experience, community, and theorizing. Our keynote speaker will be the renowned trans philosopher Talia Mae Bettcher (Cal State LA). Talks will cover topics such as gender euphoria, trans sex talk, BDSM and social class, informed consent, and the social construction of butchness. In addition to talks, the conference will include a workshop on LGBTQIA+ activism and philosophy, a party (of course), and other glam surprises. We are Land & Water Defenders Mini Film Festival & Workshop creates a space for collaboratively re-storying environmental justice and hope for all living beings. In close collaboration with many departments and centers across UC Santa Cruz and beyond, the Mini Film Festival & Workshopl is a three-day event weaving together film, research, story, and hope. It aims to bridge film directors and producers, Native and Black leaders, scholar-activists within Academia, students, and civic society from across the Americas. All those invited will put their heads and hearts together to reflect on the importance of the ongoing political struggles of Black and Indigenous peoples—and all people—for land, water, and simply, to exercise their rights to just be. We are super excited to feature three newly released award-winning documentary films over three Saturdays. The workshop will go through the major legal protections against discrimination that trans people are guaranteed in the state of California. It will also teach you how to both read and keep track of state-based legislation that affects the trans community. See more details BME80G: Kim TallBear… BME80G: Kim TallBear on From Feminist Science Studies to Native-Led Science for Land and Life April 18, 2025 8:20 pm - 9:25 pm Jack Baskin Auditorium, J. Baskin Aud 101 On Friday, April 18 at 1:20 pm, you are invited to join Associate Professor of Biomolecular Engineering Karen Miga’s BME 80G Bioethics course for a talk by Kim TallBear. Indigenous peoples are often at the receiving end of the colonial gaze, including that of scientific researchers whose work has served US and Canadian national development. Kim TallBear is best known for her anthropological study of colonial narratives such as that of the “Vanishing Indian” that animate human population genetics research. Over the past fifteen years, she has worked with scientists and social scientists to channel feminist and Indigenous analyses of science into training Indigenous scientists in critical approaches to genomics. The resulting program, Summer internship for INdigenous peoples in Genomics (SING), goes beyond critique to transform science to support Indigenous governance and life. SING Canada, founded in 2018, surpasses diversity and inclusion, and reaches toward decolonization by helping develop critical Indigenous genomics to support Indigenous governance and land back projects. This talk touches on both the disciplinary/theoretical underpinnings and programmatic details of such training. Kim TallBear (Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate) is Professor and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Peoples, Technoscience, and Society, Faculty of Native Studies, University of Alberta. She is the author of Native American DNA: Tribal Belonging and the False Promise of Genetic Science. Dr. TallBear is a regular panelist on the Media Indigena podcast and a regular media commentator on topics including Indigenous peoples, science, and technology; self-indigenization in the US and Canada; and Indigenous sexualities. Since our establishment in 1995, El Centro has been a hub of organized activities and resources supporting student transition, retention, graduation, and academic advancement. Baskin Aud 101 On Friday, April 25 at 1:20 pm, you are invited to join Associate Professor of Biomolecular Engineering Karen Miga’s BME 80G Bioethics course for a talk, Contesting Scientific Anti-Racism: Who Decides Its Meaning?, by Jenny Reardon. Jenny Reardon is Professor of Sociology and the Founding Director of the Science and Justice Research Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research draws into focus questions about identity, justice and democracy that are often silently embedded in scientific ideas and practices, particularly in modern genomic research. Her training spans molecular biology, the history of biology, science studies, feminist and critical race studies, and the sociology of science, technology and medicine. She is the author of Race to the Finish: Identity and Governance in an Age of Genomics (Princeton University Press, 2005) and The Postgenomic Condition: Ethics, Justice, Knowledge After the Genome (Chicago University Press, Fall 2017). She has been the recipient of fellowships and awards from, among others, the National Science Foundation, the Max Planck Institute, the Humboldt Foundation, the London School of Economics, the Westinghouse Science Talent Search, and the United States Congressional Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Recently, she started a project to bike over one thousand miles through her home state of Kansas to learn from farmers, ranchers and other denizens of the high plains about how best to know and care for the prairie.
