You can create a slideshow presentation, art, dance, etc 5 minutes long. showcasing your Indigenous heritage and learning about others!

Join us for the 22nd annual Practical Activism Conference! Practical Activism is a free day-long conference featuring speakers, performances, interactive workshops, and a variety of hands-on creative activities and opportunities on a wide range of social justice issues. The conference provides information, tools, and opportunities to generate local and global change. Practical Activism is coordinated, planned, and implemented by a group of passionate students from College Nine and John R. Lewis College, who are mentored by professional staff from the CoCurricular Programs Office (the CoCo). The Practical Activism Conference aims to open spaces for dialogue and inclusion, active discussion of serious issues, questioning our privileges and assumptions, and constructive and critical engagement. As such, it is a space in which we welcome discussions of gender, sexuality, power, oppression, and the problems of heteronormativity. The student-designed and facilitated workshops at Practical Activism commonly address these and many other difficult issues that concern our community. You're Invited! Best-selling author, trans advocate, and PEN America President Jennifer Finney Boylan is coming to UC Santa Cruz to give the 2025 Peggy Downes Baskin Ethics Lecture: Amelia Earhart, Saved From Drowning

In this collage of story and song, Boylan speculates on the life of Amelia Earhart after the crash. Using that event as a springboard, she considers how our social and political structures constrain human liberty, and the price that women and queer people must pay for freedom. New Yorker cartoonist Emily Flake has drawn illustrations to complement the story.

Boylan is the author of 19 books including the bestsellers She’s Not There and Mad Honey (with Jodi Picoult). Professor, trans advocate, reality TV star, and former New York Times opinion columnist, Boylan is currently President of PEN America. From 2014-2018, she was National Co-chair of GLAAD.

The Peggy Downes Baskin Ethics Lecture Series is a lively forum for discussing and exploring ethics-related challenges in human endeavors. The Peggy Downes Baskin Humanities Endowment for Interdisciplinary Ethics makes the Ethics Lecture possible, which enables the Humanities Division to promote a dialogue about ethics and ethics-related challenges in an interdisciplinary setting. The endowment was established in honor of Peggy Downes Baskin’s longtime interest in ethical issues across the academic spectrum.

Over the last four years, the United States has seen an exponential rise in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation at every level of government, the majority of which targets transgender youth in particular. In 2024 alone, over 660 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced across the country. Many of these bills are backed by pseudoscience and false information targeting gender affirming care and the affects of hormones on the body. In this workshop, we will be going through an expansive conversation of transgender reproduction that will give participants an inclusive sex education, equipping them with up-to-date, evidence-based, non-judgmental information so that they are able to make safe and informed decisions with their bodies. The content will cover the history, science, and experience of transgender reproduction, and will touch on the legal movement determined to hide it.

At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to:
1) Discuss the history of transgender medicine, as well as the effects of hormones on the body’s sexual anatomy;
