In Spring 2021, Baskin Engineering faculty were invited to participate in a survey focused on faculty perceptions and experiences of climate, inclusivity & equity at the department, division, and campus-wide levels.

The survey collected faculty's feedback on how/whether diversity, inclusion and equity (DEI) work receives due recognition, what barriers there are to doing this work, and what can be done to support this work.

The survey results will be used to inform new policies and practices, to better support faculty equity & inclusion, to ensure faculty sense of belonging, and to give appropriate recognition to faculty involvement in DEI efforts.

Pursuant to sharing what we have learned from the surveys and in the interest of facilitating discussions about our findings in this data, Associate Dean for DEI Marcella Gomez will be presenting the main findings followed by a series of discussions.

This event will be the first session of this series, focusing on faculty experiences with and views on climate for DEI. Campus participants are encouraged to engage in the discussions in person, but here is a zoom link for those who would like to join virtually.

El Centro invites the UCSC community to our 21st Annual “Nuestras Raices”, formerly known as Cesar Chavez Convocation on Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 6-9pm (doors open at 5:30pm) at the C9/JRL Multipurpose Room.

Nuestras Raices honors the work that generations of activists before us have fought for while allowing for the acknowledgment of the work of current and future activists. This new name allows for connections amongst the community, being inclusive of the work and intersectionality of different Latine communities, which creates space for folks to listen, participate, and learn from the experiences of these individuals.

This year, we are planning on showing the film "Water for Life" a 90-minute documentary that documents the work of water protectors Berta Cáceres, an Indigenous Lenca leader in Honduras; Francisco Pineda, a subsistence farmer in El Salvador; and Alberto Curamil, an Indigenous Mapuche leader in Chile. The film “Water For Life” illuminates a growing recognition of Indigenous rights and a rising demand for corporate responsibility and environmental justice that’s being seen around the world. We will be hosting a panel discussion with the film producers Will Parrinello, María José Calderón, and Bertha Caceres eldest daughter, Olivia Zúñiga Cáceres.

Free food and refreshments will be provided. This cultural and 's event is free! Logistics including parking are provided on the RSVP form.

Performance Feedback Culture

A company culture based on feedback can result in greater alignment with organizational values, improved engagement, and increased productivity. Achieving such an open culture is no easy feat. Employees tend to shy away from sharing their perspectives and managers often lack the skills to deliver feedback effectively. In this session we will review an organization’s approach to building a feedback-friendly culture, including a five-step plan to fuel feedback within the organization.

Photography provides an opportunity for us to represent our cares and concerns for health and health justice in the world beyond the university. It also opens pathways for new community connections and dialogues about important social, environmental and biological determinants of health. UCSC’s inaugural “Envisioning Health For All” student photography competition invites students from across campus to represent global and community health topics in ways that are also aimed to prompt reflection on achieving visions of health for all in communities both local and global. It is organized as a competition in order to incentivize individual involvement, but it is also conceptualized as a collective and collaborative effort to widen engagement in global and community health, including across all five divisions of our campus and between UCSC and the community.

A panel of esteemed judges will review the submissions in the Spring quarter 2024 at a special exhibition event in the UCSC library on Thursday, May 23, 2024. The 5 winners will receive $500 each. Submissions can be candid and documentary in style, posed and co-creative with the subjects they depict, or they can also be more abstract and aimed to amplify impressions or bioethical ideas. They can focus on community health issues in our local region, or more global topics, or some more complex mixture of both. In all cases, they should prompt careful reflection on either the obstacles to achieving visions of health for all or the possibilities.

For the same reason, each submission should be accompanied by a caption explaining the obstacles or possibilities that you want to convey, including where wanted quotations from either people in the photographs or the communities they represent. In this same spirit of community collaboration and ethical reflection, it is crucial for all entrants to the competition to be mindful of the dangers of objectifying people and of taking photos without their consent. After the exhibition, the winning photos will be framed and displayed in the Global and Community Health office suite on campus, and included on our website and associated program materials.

Most research on poverty focuses on the damage caused by persistent unemployment. A central implication from sociologists and other social scientists is that labor market
participation plays a seminal role in building ladders to opportunity for poor workers, families, and communities. But what actually happens when jobs are plentiful and workers are hard to come by? Moving the Needle examines how very low unemployment boosts wages at the bottom, improves job quality, lengthens job ladders, and pulls the unemployed into a booming job market. Drawing on over seventy years of
quantitative data as well as interviews with employers, jobseekers, and longtime residents of poor neighborhoods, Katherine S. Newman and Elisabeth S. Jacobs investigate the most durable positive consequences of tight labor markets. They consider the downside of overheated economies, which can fuel surging rents and ignite outmigration. And they draw on the evidence to offer a call to implement policies
and practices on behalf of those workers who have for too long been shut out of opportunity to thrive.

In Spring 2021, Baskin Engineering faculty were invited to participate in a survey focused on faculty perceptions and experiences of climate, inclusivity & equity at the department, division, and campus-wide levels. The survey collected faculty's feedback on how/whether diversity, inclusion and equity (DEI) work receives due recognition, what barriers there are to doing this work, and what can be done to support this work. The survey results will be used to inform new policies and practices, to better support faculty equity & inclusion, to ensure faculty sense of belonging, and to give appropriate recognition to faculty involvement in DEI efforts.

Pursuant to sharing what we have learned from the surveys and in the interest of facilitating discussions about our findings in this data, Associate Dean for DEI Marcella Gomez will be presenting the main findings followed by a series of discussions.

This will be the third session in that series, focusing on faculty's inclusive mentoring practices. Folks on campus are encouraged to participate in the discussions in person, but here is a zoom link for those who would like to join virtually.

Each year, the Vaske Lab (Treehouse) participates in Shave for the Cause to raise more than funds and awareness — it shows kids who lost their hair during treatment that you support them. We organize a shave event where people can volunteer to shave their heads or donate to the organization. We host this event annually and encourage professors, students, and administration to help support pediatric cancer research. CSP Seminar Speaker Cynthia Ellis-Topsey, Ambassador-at-Large for the Garifuna Nation in Belize and founder of The Godsman Celestino Center For Garifuna Culture. As a community advocate, her lifelong mission centers on advocating for Garifuna sovereignty and land rights, both locally and globally. As the Ambassador at Large for the Garifuna Nation and Chief Executive Officer of The Indigenous Peoples Network, she tirelessly champions equality, especially in the realms of sustainability and environmental justice. Her research interests encompass a range of issues, from native agroecology practices to coastal adaptation.
